Active Aesthetic is a guide to athletic wear for people who train regularly and would rather buy the right thing once. We write about what a garment is made of, how it behaves when you sweat in it, and whether it will still be worth wearing after a season of washing.
What we cover#
Our starting point is always the activity, not the brand. The questions we keep returning to:
- Which fabrics suit which kind of effort, and which ones hold on to sweat or smell?
- How do you layer for cold, wind and rain without ending up overheated?
- What does a good fit actually feel like when you are moving, as opposed to standing still in a fitting room?
- What do training shoes need to do for the work you give them, and how do you judge a sole and an upper?
- Which small pieces — socks, bags, bottles, supports — are worth carrying, and which are not?
- How do you wash, dry and store technical clothing so it survives?
- How much of a price is the garment and how much is the logo?
How we assess gear#
We work from information that can be checked rather than from impressions.
Published specifications. Fibre content, fabric weight, knit or weave construction, and any finishes a maker states. If a maker publishes a fabric weight, we use it. If they only publish a marketing name for the fabric, we say so and treat the claim as unverified.
Care labelling. The care instructions attached to a garment tell you a lot about what it is made of and what will destroy it — whether it tolerates heat, whether it can be tumble dried, whether it should be kept away from fabric softener or chlorine. We read them as engineering documents, not as small print.
Construction detail. Seam type and placement, whether seams are flatlocked or overlocked, how a waistband is built, whether there is a gusset, how a zip is set, whether a pocket is anchored. These are the parts that fail first, and they are visible before you buy.
Published testing where it exists. Where a maker or a standards body publishes test methods or results, we will refer to the method rather than repeat a number as though it were a guarantee.
We do not have a laboratory, and we do not invent measurements, test results or statistics. Where something is a rule of thumb or our own judgement, we write it as one.
Corrections#
Fabrics get reformulated, specifications change, and makers quietly revise a garment between seasons. If something here no longer matches what is on sale or on the label, tell us and we will correct it. Corrections are noted on the page rather than made silently.
Funding#
Active Aesthetic is funded by advertising and by affiliate links to retailers. Some links to shops on this site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through one, at no extra cost to you. This is stated on the pages where it applies.
Two rules hold regardless of money:
- We do not publish sponsored reviews, and we do not accept payment for a mention.
- A commission never determines a recommendation. Where a guide argues against a category, a material or a purchase, that argument stands whether or not a link could earn anything.
